Article 49: Want to Succeed... What was Your Last Instruction?

I hear people say all the time, “I just want to succeed!” and then I immediately ask them to tell me what the last instruction from their mentor was.  Most respond with either “What’s a mentor?” or “I don’t have a mentor.”  Mentors come in a variety of forms but all of them do essentially the same thing.  Help you get what you want, when you want, while avoiding costly/painful mistakes and delays.

We all have mentors whether we know it or not.  Now a mentor, ideally, would be someone who you could regularly meet with a couple times a month.  They would talk you down from some of your mountains and provide you with sustenance during your journey.  However, if you are one of the millions who don’t have a one on one mentor than you probably still do have a mentor in your life but it’s in the form of – AWWL (ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN).  Meaning anyone who will listen to your plight and then give you their Monday morning quarterback advice is approved to speak into your life.  Their only qualification is that happen to be in the same space as you, breathing, and have an opinion.  For those who don’t know it – that’s the worst but most common mentor.

Most of us, for a variety of reasons, don’t have the other type; the cool mentor who speaks pearls of wisdom into our life.  It could be a geographic issue, not located in our same city, or maybe those we wish to mentor us just don’t have the time, talent or knowledge of our desire for that type of relationship.  Rest assured there are things you can do if the above seems to be the case.  I have found a way to have an abundance of mentors at my beckon call 24/7 for a price of a decent lunch.  No, it’s not that I’m that well connected or come from a family lineage of influence but rather have found the power of Teaching CD’s

Now I choose the CD route because I’m in my car a decent amount of time, each week, and even though it may only be 10, 15 or 30 minutes at a time I’m able to learn from a variety of great men and woman on a multitude of topics.  These people have gone where I want to go and convey the path message in a very clear and concise manner.  Most also have written write books and/or make television appearances.  You would be amazed at how much you can grow and accomplish through these types of media.  Again, it’s not as good as a living, breathing, one/one mentor relationship but sometimes you have to be creative and make sacrifices in order to get what you need.

No matter which mentorship tool you choose, the key is to follow their instructions to the letter.  No excuses, no rationalizing, just plain and simple know what you are told to do and then do it.  Nothing frustrates a mentor more than seeing their students, who sought them out, ask for more instructions when they have yet to follow the last directive.  Almost every time the reason you are not getting what you want is because you have not done what you were last told to do.  Instead you may have decided to do your own thing, give a half hearted effort, or try and skip a step.  If you take any of those approaches then you will get those types of results which will cause you to, once again, get in your own way and inhibit your progress.

When a mentor gives you direction about a particular situation it is because they know more than you do about that situation.  They know what is coming after you do step 1.  In fact, they know all of the steps you will need to perform in order to maximize your efforts and eliminate or severely limit the obstacles which will be coming at you.  Like any good teacher they explain the entire process, create a plan, establish agreement, and then unroll the steps, like a scroll, one at a time.

Mentors are gifts from above.  They want to help you succeed.  You have chosen them for a reason so make sure you follow their direction and you will obtain what you desire sooner than you ever thought possible!
